Breathwork
Medicine
Breathwork (sometimes called conscious breathing,
rebirthing, intensive breathing, etc.) was developed in the 1970s
by Leonard Orr, and popularized in writings and workshops by Orr
and Sondra Ray.
Physically, breathwork is done in sessions lasting
about 1 hour (with time provided for preparation at the beginning,
followed by processing and integration at the end). Physiologically,
breathwork is a natural way to bring more life-feeding oxygen into
the body than it normally receives. The purpose? Psychologically
and spiritually, breathwork is a potent technique to advance self-knowledge,
personal growth, transformation, and healing.
Breathwork isn’t like a therapy session. Through
intensive breathing, you can become empowered as your own inner
therapist. The facilitator acts as a guide to assist that process.
Breathwork doesn’t involve any specific belief
system. It’s about allowing the breath to open pathways of
awareness that emerge from within the core of consciousness.
